Abstract

An aesthetic analysis of the lyrics of selected songs composed by Renato Russo – an icon of Brazilian popular music in the 80's – will demonstrate, departing from the three theoretical vectors proposed by Umberto Eco, how this lyrics mingle symbolic informations present in social signs and recuperate a mythopoetic set of ideas historically themathized. The explicit and strong connexion with several cultural references identified as transgressive and freeing positions, makes his work eventually hark back to the persona of the artist we choose to analyze here – a semiological system by itself, as we must consider it – so that we can establish the relationship of equivalence and/or superposition between the intentio autoris and the intentio operis and intentio lectoris, the three vectors Eco speaks of. Keywords: Brazilian popular song; Renato Russo; author's intention;Umberto Eco.
