Abstract

The teaching of grammar has been put aside in portuguese language lessons for "Ensino Médio" and for "Ensino Fundamental". This paper argues for the teaching of grammar based on a model that explains the functions of the linguistic elements which constitute a text. The functionalist approach to clause combining in discourse is given as example.
