Abstract

 ABSTRACTThis paper describes a series of steps that turn thought into language, speech, and recorded information, being this one regarded as the focus of information science. Considering that technological advances have nowadays determined relevant changes in information organization, management and dissemination, the professional profile of librarians is analyzed having in view new and multiple skills and competencies, as well as the need of interdisciplinary work. Within this context,  the historical background, and new concept of library are focused. Regarding the necessary complementary characteristic between information and reading, it is noticed that the major challenge faced by contemporary libraries is the one of becoming a place of convergence for information access and reading habit.
