The paper provides a summary of Marx and Engels’ study materials, which have been published in the fourth section of MEGA2. These documents, written over more than four decades, represent not only the multidisciplinary basis of Marxian work, but are also a broad record of the state of the art of various branches of knowledge at the time of their authors. The materials have great continuity and, at the same time, several specificities, that can be presented in four major periods, from 1839 to 1848 (MEGA² IV/1–6), from 1849 to 1860 (MEGA² IV/7–16), from 1861 to 1872 (MEGA² IV/17–21) and finally from 1873 to 1883 (MEGA² IV/22–31).
