Impartiality would be the requirement for the views of others to be considered in moral deliberation. However, the meaning of others that must be considered is a relevant problem. Closed impartiality is limited to the exclusively defined focus group, a "people" or "nation". Open impartiality expands the moral circle for all human beings. Expanded impartiality demands even more: all individuals capable of suffering must have their interests considered impartially. The purpose of this article is to discuss the scope and limitations of these concepts of impartiality in Sen and Singer's philosophy.
