KANT AGAINST GLUTTONY
BUT IN DEFENSE OF A GOOD BANQUET

The aim of this article is to unveil the depth of Kant's expositions against gluttony in the “Article III. On Stupefying Oneself by Excessive Use of Food or Drink” of the “Chapter I: Man's Duty to Himself as an Animal Being” of his “Doctrine of Virtue” in the “Metaphysics of Morals”. In this unveiling, we want to emphasize that Kant seeks to substantiate the duty not to be gluttonous, but not for the sake of maintaining good health. In addition, we want to show that, for Kant, there is an intellectual way of using the means of fruition, that is, through stupefying means, which, however, he does not advocate either. Finally, it is necessary to clarify that, even though he denies gluttony, Kant indicates the existence of a moral purpose for taking part in a good banquet, namely to communicate with others, out of love, in search of the good that is the beautiful truth.
