OEDIPUS THE KING AS AN EVENT IN MICHEL FOUCAULT'S THOUGHT

The aim of this article is to present and discuss the contribution of Michel Foucault’s recurrent readings of Sophocles’ tragedy Oedipus the King. Far from the universalist and timeless approaches consecrated by authors such as Freud, Lévi-Strauss and Heidegger, Foucault seeks to reposition tragedy within its historical, political and discursive horizon. In doing so, the author understands tragedy as an event that constitutes a new regime of veridiction in the Greek polis of the 5th century B.C. For the French philosopher, tragedy stages the transition from prophecy to testimony in the process of legal investigation of truth. Thus, we will see how Foucault mobilizes the notion of symbolon to think about the dispersion and recomposition of fragments of truth carried out by the investigation staged in tragedy. It is the excess of knowledge and power that makes Oedipus lose his throne. Furthermore, when seeking to refine his analyses, Foucault will also consider Oedipus the King in the key of alethurgy, that is, the tragedy not only dramatizes a search for truth, but also refers to the modes of subjectivation that tension power and freedom.
