MARCUSE VERSUS SCHMITT

In 1934, Herbert Marcuse described an “inner kinship” between liberal social theory and the totalitarian theory of the State, which he attributed entirely to Schmittian thought. The bond between liberalism and fascism was formulated by Marcuse based on the concept of the “total State” proposed by Schmitt, a model of a strong State that could guarantee the depoliticization of the economy. The article attempts to highlight how, in the midst of the circumstances, Marcuse readily perceived an internal movement of an intrinsic relationship between the authoritarian state and private capital, a model that would nevertheless guarantee space for the economy to operate freely.
