This article aims to present the issue of the relationship between Gilles Deleuze’s ontology of difference and Spinoza’s idea of life. Throughout the text, we outline the central aspects of the notion of difference as conceived by Deleuze during the development of his philosophy, and show how his engagement with Spinoza’s thought enabled the constitution of the plane of absolute immanence. For Deleuze, Spinoza’s ontology conceives of beings not as self-contained individualities – meaning the distinction between bodies is not a real distinction, but a modal one – but rather as beings that exist in God and are expressed through the continuous power of Nature. Deleuze’s interpretation of the idea of univocity in Spinoza allows for a broad and radical understanding of modes of existence within an open, plural plane of life. Such an ontology introduces a dynamic and univocal principle for all existing beings, thereby generating a contemporary understanding of the concept of the organism.
