Abstract

This article proposes to bring a discussion about the social and cultural diversity of Northern Parahyba City’s inhabitants in the first decades of the 20th century, above all the popular everyday life practices on the streets and lanes of the city, more common space of their dwellings, and their leisure and practices that they played on urban space; noting especially to the conflicting relations bring from the elites intention, who sought the consolidation of another kind of sociability, identified with patterns and values established by them to consolidate a modern city, trying to spread in lower classes new habits and sociability forms, based upon a systematic surveillance on their activities and use of these spaces and territories. To highlight this tension we seek to understand how many residents will build their own experience and redefines by passing this groups of values and codes that they tried to impose. In this endeavor, we will take as source the complaints and news of city newspapers. The press will be taken here as spokesman for the interests of elites and ideas of progress and civilization that permeated their imagination in the early 20th century. So that presents itself as a discursive production concerned, carrying an intricate net of power relations that produces a place for modern city dwellers.
