Abstract

The pepper plants present wide diversity contributing to its use as an ornamental plant. The objective of this work was to estimate an F5 generation of ornamental peppercorns (Capsicum annuum L.) and their plant characteristics based on qualitative descriptors. The experiment was carried out in the Laboratory of Plant Biotechnology of the Center of Agricultural Sciences of the Federal University of Paraíba (CCA / UFPB), Areia / PB. Four segregating populations (56.8), (56.26), (17.15) and (55.50). It was used 8 descriptors: stem color (CC), presence of anthocyanin (ANTO), stem shape (FC), stem pubescence (PBC), growth habit (HC), branching density (DR), leaf (FF) and leaf color (CF). The data analyzed through descriptive statistics and expressed in percentage. The characters of nodal anthocyanin, stem pubescence and leaf shape were monomorphic in the 4 families evaluated. The stem shape varied only in the family 56.26, forming two classes: cylindrical and angular. Branching density varied in families 17.15 and 55.50 forming two classes: intermediate and scarce. The color of the stem varied in the 4 families forming two classes: green with purple and purple spots. The habit of growth varied in the 4 families, forming two classes: intermediate and erect. The color of the leaf varied between and within the 4 families forming three classes: variegated, dark green and purple. There was variability for the evaluated plant characters, being important its use and characterization in ornamental pepper accesses, allowing the selection between and within families for characters that meet the needs and market demand.
