Abstract

The textile sector, economic base at Vale do Itajaí, in Santa Catarina, has a great demand in the manuals translations for mechanics, technicians and other professionals in the textile industry. This article aims to present a methodological approach to develop a bilingual glossary of sewing machine, in order to assist in the translation of those technical manuals, give support to industry professionals and contribute, in general, to the terminology studies. The first stage of the research was the compilation of two corpora from sewing machines manuals: English and Portuguese. Later, using the WordSmith Tools software it was possible to extract the terms candidates that were validated into a quantitative and qualitative analysis. After collecting the terms it was carried out to the final level, terminology records. This methodology showed up good results regarding to the extraction of terms and for corresponding words in Portuguese, then it was concluded that this methodology can be replicated to the translators to produce their own terminology glossaries, dictionaries and translation memories in any field of knowledge.
