This paper analyzes the presentation of the diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), produced and distributed by the American Psychiatric Association. Initially, sought to understand the changes in the respective disorder throughout the reissues of the document up to its latest version (DSM-5-TR). Afterwards, both the sections that make up the DSM-5 and DSM-5-TR that discuss cultural and gender issues were analyzed, as well as the diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria itself from contemporary perspectives of gender studies. Significant contrasts are observed between what is presented in the manual and what is discussed by these theorists, as the DSM perpetuates the biomedical notion of gender. It is also noted that certain terms are treated uncritically, based on the assertion of scientific neutrality on the part of the clinician/researcher, which ultimately leads professionals who rely on this resource as a working tool to adopt a generalist interpretation, detached from the intersections that permeate the experiences of sexuality and gender.
