A Faveleira (Cnidoscolus quercifolius) no Semiárido Nordestino
Abstract
The faveleira (Cnidoscolus quercifolius), a native species of the Caatinga biome, has gained increasing attention for its ecological resilience and potential contribution to sustainable development in Brazil’s semi-arid regions. This review explores the species’ main potentialities, focusing on its environmental adaptation, economic value, and biotechnological applications. Emphasis is given to the composition and industrial relevance of its seed oils and fatty acids, as well as its role in biodiversity conservation and sustainable land use. The integration of ecological, chemical, and socioeconomic perspectives highlights the faveleira as a promising resource for bioeconomic initiatives and rural innovation. By synthesizing current knowledge, this work underscores the strategic role of C. quercifolius in fostering sustainable production systems and environmental balance in the Brazilian semi-arid context.
