“We exist. We resist. We will fight for justice”:
the figure of resistance in the irmandade series

We start from the hypothesis that "Irmandade" is an icon of contemporary serial drama, characterized by i) an environment of moral decay; ii) psychologically complex characters; iii) intricate representations of the world; and iv) intertwined dramatic situations. We will focus on the protagonist, Cristina, a young lawyer who reconnects with her brother Edson, who has been imprisoned for 20 years and is the leader of the criminal gang Irmandade. Cristina's approach to Edson places her within a universe she was unaware of: one in which torture and violence are normalized. The protagonist's choices completely transform her ordinary life, leading her to become an antiheroine. Methodologically, we employ a narrative system to identify in the poetic structure of the audiovisual narrative the portrayal of this transformation and how it contributes to establishing the conventions of contemporary serial drama as a narrative genre.
