Abstract

"Otaku: The Children of the Virtual" by Étienne Barral explores the Japanese otaku subculture, highlighting its relationship with technological advancement and social contradictions. Barral analyzes the search for refuge in the virtual world, the role of media in the formation of identity and the challenges faced by otaku in Japanese society. It also addresses topics such as strict education, school bullying and even the 1995 terrorist attack on the Tokyo subway. The work offers a provocative and accessible analysis, although written more than two decades ago, which may limit its relevance for understanding recent changes in otaku culture and society at large.
