Cosmophobic City?
A Counter-Colonial Critique of Capitalist Urbanization

This theoretical essay reflects on the coloniality of capitalist urbanization, characterized by “cosmophobia”, which excludes other cultural ways of living, occupying space, and relating to the environment and the multiplicity of beings inhabiting it. Drawing on the concepts of Lefebvre (2001), Brenner (2018), and Nêgo Bispo (SANTOS, 2023), the text is divided into three parts. First, it discusses the formulation of the right to the city as resistance to neoliberal urbanization and critiques its instrumentalization by the logic of commodification and economic growth. Next, it differentiates between the decolonial scholar critique and the counter-colonial quilombola critique, while exploring the concept of colonization as formulated by Nêgo Bispo. Finally, it examines the counter-colonial critique of capitalist urban life offered by the quilombola thinker, distinguished by cosmophobia and disconnection.
