UMA ANÁLISE DE FRANKENSTEIN E POBRES CRIATURAS

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study between two pieces of artwork: Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus, by Mary Shelley (1818) and the movie Poor Creatures (2023), by Yorgos Lanthimos. The analysis will focus on the protagonists' processes of subjectivity and their encounters towards reading, demonstrating how this encounter will be decisive for both protagonist and heroine's journey in their respective stories. In this context, this work aims to present the act of reading as a powerful subjectivizing experience, based on the characters' analysis and the works' plot. The concepts of epiphany and catharsis will also be discussed in each case, as well as the effects of these resources on the reader and spectator. The theoretical basis gathers references such as Guattari and Rolnik (1996), Murdock (2022) and Petit (2009), which allow us to attest the importance of the act of reading in the processes of subjectivity. Therefore, reading is configured as an influential and decisive aspect in the journey of these characters who, when becoming readers, also invite the reader and the spectator to reflect on themselves, the work and the world, enabling an instigating and transformative metaliterary and metafilmic experience based on the exercise of reflection about the forms of artistic creation.
