This paper aims to present a comparative analysis between the model author (Eco,
1979; Antunes, 2009) inscribed in the original text, A Thousand Splendid Suns (Hosseini, 2007), and the one inscribed in the Portuguese translation, A Cidade do Sol (Hosseini/Rouanet, 2007). The analysis focuses on the culture specific items (CSIs) (Franco Aixelá, 1996) that the original presents to the American reader and Maria Helena Rouanet's choices when translating them into Portuguese, and checks to what extent the translator repeats the translation strategies inscribed by the original model author in the translated text. Faced with the cultural gaps that the CSIs represent, Rouanet has two procedures to choose from: either she adopts the techniques inscribed in the original, s of the model author, or she opts for other procedures, moving away from the limit that the original model author represents. The translator makes a different choice.
