The terreiro das pretas anti-racist communication in Cariri, Ceará

Abstract

This work focuses on the communication activities of Terreiro das Pretas, an autonomous quilombo community of the Neves Carvalho family, located in Crato, in the Cariri region of Ceará. The Terreiro develops practices aimed at valuing Black identity and building anti-racist communication in the territory. The research aims to understand how Terreiro das Pretas intervenes in the regional context through communicative actions that confront structural racism and promote new ways of narrating, existing, and resisting for Black people. The methodological approach is based on a bibliographic review, interviews, and participatory observation, and highlights how the Terreiro acts as a contemporary quilombo, promoting communication anchored in ancestry and collective listening. Notable among its communicative actions are the miolagem and initiatives such as Cinemáfrica and Projeto Oliveira's, both organized as collectives of the Grupo de Valorização Negra do Cariri (Black Valorization Group of Cariri, GRUNEC). These actions demonstrate how the Terreiro produces narratives starring Black individuals, strengthening community ties and producing living pedagogies of resistance.
