Abstract

In the midst of the climate crisis arising from the way we relate to nature and its goods, the developmentalist paradigm has driven the creation of alternatives to maintain the functioning of the current neo-extractivist system. Wind energy occupies a prominent place in many countries. However, its implementation is producing impacts that affect rural populations. Through reports published in online newspapers in the advanced Google search engine, we sought to understand how the semi-arid communities of the Northeast narrate and face the implications of the implementation of wind towers in their territories. In order to categorize the main emerging themes related to the impacts on the livelihoods of rural communities, Bardin's Content Analysis was used. From the analysis of the 29 news items collected, it was possible to structure four categories: Invisibilization of local knowledge and ways of life; Territorial dispossession and violations of land rights; Psychosocial impacts and everyday illnesses; and Resistance and reexistence in the territories. The analysis of the news shows psycho-socio-environmental impacts from the fencing of land, through the invisibility of knowledge to changes in community bonds and the appearance of diseases. Therefore, the energy transition is being driven by corporate logics that impact territories. We highlight the importance of inclusion and protagonism of peasant communities.

Jizlayne Vitória Bezerra Estevam da Fonseca, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte

She holds a degree in Environmental Technology from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) and is a graduate of the Coletivo Terres research group (Land, Education and Knowledge). She is currently an undergraduate student in Psychology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), a scholarship recipient of the PET Information and Digital Health University Extension program, a member of the Center for Environmental Studies and Interactions with Ruralities (NAIR), and an associate researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Study on Hunger, Health and Society (NIPEFOS). Her research interests lie in the areas of Environmental Psychology, Community Psychology in the context of rural areas in the Brazilian backlands, Environmental Sciences, and Climate Change.

Fernanda Fernandes Gurgel, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN)

Graduated in Psychology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (1999), with a PhD in Social Psychology from UFRN/UFPB, and doctoral internship at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Trairí (FACISA/UFRN), associate researcher of the Inter-Action Person-Environment research group (GEPA/UFRN), and of the Interdisciplinary Research and Study Center on Hunger, Health and Society (NIPEFOS). Coordinator of the Center for Environmental Studies and Interaction with Ruralities (NAIR). Member, since 2006, of the National Association for Research and Postgraduate Studies in Psychology (ANPEPP), linked to the Working Group on Environmental Psychology. Founding member of the Brazilian Association of Environmental Psychology and Person-Environment Relations (ABRAPA). Member, since 2021, of the Working Group on Environmental Psychology of the Federal Council of Psychology. Her research interests lie in the areas of Community Social Psychology, Person-Environment Relations, and Rural Life in the Brazilian Sertão region.
