Abstract

Recognized as the leading cause of femicide in Brazil and worldwide, domestic violence is rooted in a patriarchal and sexist culture. As a social obstacle, it also constitutes a public health issue. Based on the principles of Discourse Analysis, this research aims to describe the recurrence of domestic violence portrayed in the film It Ends With Us and its repetition in real life; contextualize the importance of Law No. 11.340/2006 – the Maria da Penha Law against domestic and family violence; and analyze the transgenerational cycles of domestic violence. An integrative literature review method was adopted for the development of this study. The research is basic in nature and exploratory in its objectives. To support the analysis, the study draws on theorists such as Pêcheux (1999), Orlandi (2020), Federici (2023), Fontana (2016), and Garcia (2021), among others. The findings reveal that domestic violence causes widespread harm to women, potentially leading to physical, mental, and emotional disorders for both the victims and those around them. The study also highlights a historical suppression of women's rights, driven by the late creation of equality norms, social neglect, and failures in the enforcement of the Maria da Penha Law.
