Artificial intelligence applications in brazilian university libraries:
an overview and challenges for professionals

University libraries are traditionally recognized as information units responsible for storing, organizing, making available and disseminating information to the academic community. However, this function has undergone transformations as society has evolved, also influenced by constant budget cuts, the scarcity of resources and the growing use of technologies based on artificial intelligence. Given this context, this article aims to investigate the applications of artificial intelligence in Brazilian university libraries, identifying the challenges faced and the impacts on professional performance and the services offered to users. As a methodological procedure, a bibliographical survey was carried out based on the production available in the Scopus, Information Science Database and Google Scholar databases. In terms of objectives, the study is characterized as exploratory-descriptive. It is a qualitative study, based on a literature review on the topics of artificial intelligence and university libraries. The categorical content analysis proposed by Bardin was used to analyze the data. The results reveal a still incipient but growing adoption of artificial intelligence-based solutions in Brazilian libraries. It is concluded that, although at an early stage, the technology is already being used in areas such as technical processing, research and service management.
