Rainer Forst’s concept of the "right to justification" centers on the fundamental debate regarding whether there are limits to tolerance within the framework of democratic practice as a normative ideal for a just society. Tolerance is understood here not merely as a subjective basis for deliberation in social relations, but as a shared collective dimension within a context of justification and legitimation. Accordingly, this essay aims to examine the presuppositions of modernity inherent in Forst’s approach to the democratic question within the context of justice. The author analyzes the notion of "limits" by drawing upon the various meanings of tolerance developed by modern thinkers. Thus, the essay seeks to outline these modern interpretations of tolerance while addressing Forst’s key questions for democracy: Should we tolerate the intolerant? Does refusing to tolerate the intolerant amount to intolerance itself? And finally, does tolerance have a limit?
