Call for Submissions: Thematic Issue in partnership with the Brazilian Curriculum Association (Vol. 18, No. 2)

2026-04-10

Revista Espaço do Currículo (REC), in partnership with the Associação Brasileira de Currículo (ABdC), invites researchers to submit manuscripts for the thematic issue “Trends and Perspectives for Research on the Relationships between Integrated Curricula and Democratic Schools”, organized by Andrio Alves Gatinho (UFPA) and Roberto Rafael Dias da Silva (UNISINOS).

Scope:

This thematic dossier proposal seeks to develop a mapping of contemporary trends and perspectives for research on the relationships between integrated curricula and democratic schools. Considering the challenges currently identified in proposing critical studies on new curricular designs and other formative arrangements for democratic schools, this dossier aims to welcome critical and creative alternatives for the composition of new inquiries for the beginning of this century. The concepts of “integrated curriculum” and “curricular integration” have been present in Brazilian curricular debates in recent decades and, in general, mark the relationships between fields of knowledge and students’ experiences, arguing that these should be handled in a more flexible and critical way to understand or address the issues and problems posed by contemporary life and their practical experiences. We have observed the implementation of integrated curricular proposals that have been used as mere “slogans” (Santomé, 1998). In general, educational agents have incorporated this vocabulary into their pedagogical practices due to the importance that official discourses from Ministries and Departments of Education have attributed to certain languages and discourses. We invite researchers to reflect on the relationship between integrated curricula and democratic schools, discussing the complex relations embedded in the school curriculum, which require the field to analyze the discourses and modes of organization used as part of a process of updating school pedagogical practices by introducing forms and models that may foster better and more meaningful teaching-learning relationships. However, such proposals demand attention and deeper reflection on “decaffeinated” proposals that strip integrated and democratic initiatives of their full critical potential.

Submission deadline: May 1 to May 31, 2026.
