“The Grammar of Time: for a New Political Culture” by Boaventura de Sousa Santos

Abstract

Nuestra América and the hegemonic common sense for a new political culture, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Portuguese academic, social activist with strong international influence, in his vast academic-scientific production, became a mandatory reference for Social Sciences, Education, Law, Social Work, Political Science, among others. Full Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, he is also Director of the Center for Social Studies of that institution, of the Permanent Observatory of Justice and founder of the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais. In his work “The grammar of time: for a new political culture” (2010), the author consolidates years of research and his approximation with the post-colonial perspective, highlighting the collective character of the construction of texts that, according to him, synthesizes his old search for a “new common sense”. Furthermore, already in the preface, he argues that this book fulfills the main objective of his discussions, which is to lay the foundations for a new political culture that allows a return to counter-hegemonic thinking and achieves social and emancipatory transformation.
