Towards an ontology of the source: trace and artifact in Michel de Certeau's Historiographical Operation.
Abstract
This article investigates the epistemological reconfiguration of the concept of the historical source as a central axis of historiography's response to the sceptical challenge of the linguistic turn. It upholds the thesis that the crisis of the 1970s and 1980s, which questioned the scientific status of history by emphasising its narrative and rhetorical character, was confronted through an assimilation of an ontological-operational nature, which reshaped the very nature of the historical source. This shift consisted of refounding the understanding of the historical document by articulating reflections from the German hermeneutic tradition – from Johann Gustav Droysen to Wilhelm Dilthey, Martin Heidegger, and Hans-Georg Gadamer – and the French tradition, particularly the contribution of Paul Ricoeur. The analytical trajectory demonstrates that the source was progressively redefined in its irreducible dual nature: as a trace, a material index of a real and alien past that imposes an ethical limit on interpretation; and as a linguistic artifact, a construction of meaning already mediated by language and intentionality, which demands an interpretative operation in the present. The central hypothesis is that the synthesis of this dual nature was incorporated into Michel de Certeau's "historiographical operation" (1975), which established the rethinking of the source as the foundational gesture of an ethical and methodological practice engaging with the alterity of the past. In this operation, the historical craft is conceived as a negotiation between the historian's present and the past as other, transforming temporal distance from an insurmountable abyss into the very link of intelligibility. It is concluded that, far from ratifying sceptical relativism, the criticism of the rhetorical turn allowed history to reinvent itself as a science of interpretation, whose scientificity lies in the rigorous mediation between the vestige of past experience and narrative construction.
