THE “APPLE OF CARROLL'S EYE” IN DIFFERENT ILLUSTRATIONS

Abstract

Since its publication in 1865, the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll – literary pseudonym of the British writer and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson – has been successful and aroused the interest of several artists in showing their own versions of the figure of the curious girl created by John Tenniel, the most famous illustrator of Carroll's work. Therefore, our objective is to observe how different images of this character, produced by different illustrators, contribute to her remaining alive in the imagination of readers, while at the same time expanding the meaning of her adventure through that wonderful universe. To this end, we selected the editions illustrated by Mariana Newlands (2014), Camille Rose Garcia (2010), Marcos Garuti (2010) and Jô Oliveira (2002), as they represent a diversity of artistic traits and styles. As a theoretical foundation to achieve our objective, we resort to studies by Oliveira (2008), Nikolajeva and Scott (2011), Biazetto (2008) and Fittipaldi (2008), which deal with reading images and words in books aimed at children and young adults. We hope to contribute to the expansion of studies that deal with illustration in books for children, as it constitutes a primary element for this audience and has countless possibilities of meaning.
