Abstract

The theory of residuality, systematized by Professor Roberto Pontes, has been a valuable resource for many researchers and students in the analysis of various literary works over the course of more than two decades. Its influence is evident in the growing number of undergraduate and graduate studies that use this theory as a theoretical foundation. At UFPB, Professor Pontes' visits contributed to the dissemination of this theory, especially in graduate courses. This resulted in its application in final papers, scientific articles, and book chapters. However, challenges arose when applying the theory directly to the literary field, where it is clearer in cultural aspects and in studies of the imaginary than in literature itself. This difficulty motivated the search for auxiliary methods that would allow the use of the theory of residuality in literary analysis without resorting to other theories, such as Genette's hypertextuality or Bakhtin's dialogism. In addition, the complexity of identifying the origin of the remaining residue brought us closer to studies of the imaginary, in an attempt to find this starting point. This work aims to present these auxiliary methods in literary analysis from the perspective of residuality. Authors such as Jaume Aurell (New Medievalism), Carl Jung (Myth and Archetype), Eleazar Melitínski (Literary Archetype) and Hilário Franco Júnior (Imaginary) will be fundamental in this reflection, helping not only in local analyses, but also those who use residuality as a theoretical basis.
