Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between diary writing and the idea of voice. Initially, we proposed an introduction that presents the diary genre. Our text then evaluates, based on a contiguous network of contacts and possibilities of a dialogue between literature, literary criticism, and psychoanalysis, some excerpts from the diaries of three important female writers of the 20th century: Diarios, by the Argentine Alejandra Pizarnik, Gathering Blossoms Under Fire: The Journal of Alice Walker, by the American Alice Walker, and Livros de Horas, by the Portuguese Maria Gabriela Llansol. Based on what Lucia Castello Branco proposes in the recent edition of O que é escrita feminina [What is Feminine Writing], we seek to verify to what extent the proposition of diaries by the aforementioned authors stages a transcendence of the traditional and tributary sense of an understanding of literature only as representation. As Llansol reminds us, in Lisboaleipzig I, it may be necessary to go to the encounter with textuality and seek an affirmation of writing as figuration and presentation, as a living thing. The diaries studied here will thus reveal a way of existing based on the exercise of voice through writing, bringing together subjectivity, signature, and testimony, according to the understanding of Shoshana Felman (1993). Furthermore, to explore the meanings of the voice and its approximations to emptiness, silence, echo, and a scream, we resort to the critical-theoretical propositions of Jean-Michel Vives (2020) and Erik Porge (2014).
