According to the view expressed by technological determinism, science and technology are—as the term itself reveals—determinants of social organization forms. It is understood that determinism is sustained by the idea that technology not only has a definitive action on the constitutive processes of social institutions but also presents a unilateral trajectory regarding technological development. This implies the exclusion of the notion of human intervention in Science and Technology (S&T). Taking these statements into account, the objective of this article is to clarify some reflections of the philosopher Andrew Feenberg regarding the impact of S&T on society, countering determinist theses that assume its neutrality in social relations. As a theoretical framework for this research, we utilize several of Feenberg’s texts that contribute to the understanding of the concept of critical constructivism, presented by the philosopher as a response to instrumentalist, substantivist, and determinist notions of technology. Our hypothesis is that the development of S&T is directly related to society and, therefore, is not limited to criteria of efficiency, as traditionally thought in reductionist notions of technology.
