Abstract

This article focuses on some of the latest texts by French intellectual Michel de Certeau, particularly his articles on “the social functioning of belief” (1985, p. 364). Based on Certeau's question about the relationship between “saying” and “believing,” two notions dear to the author and central to understanding the “act of believing” as conceived by Certeau are defined. The first part focuses on the notion of “received,” mobilized by the author to substantiate belief in verbal transmission or in the dialogue between two subjects — differentiating it from belief sustained by referentiality. In a second moment, the notion of “authority” is characterized, which, according to Certeau, is the support of all dialogue that takes “received” statements as a condition of possibility and favors shared belief. In line with this argument, dialogue is promoted with some authors commented on by Certeau, and others not: Sigmund Freud, Dan Sperber, Hannah Arendt, Renato Lessa, and, above all, Aristotle.
