Abstract

The challenge proposed in the title of this work is to reflect on the challenges of Adult and Youth Education (EJA) as a modality offered in basic education. Although it is part of the school, EJA is not always included in daily activities, projects, and educational actions, which leads to reflection on inclusion and a feeling of marginalization. Following this line of thought, we reconstruct the struggles from the first initiatives to alfabetize the people for the right to education as a subjective and non-negotiable good. We continue the reflection on how EJA has been constituted as a modality since the premises of popular education, its institutionalization in Law 9394/96, and in the face of contemporary challenges of globalization and neoliberalism, which require the uninterrupted continuation of these struggles. Another challenge that unfolds is overcoming the prejudice that EJA itself suffers within the school environment, in its own home. Although we do not delve deeply into this debate, we hope that while there is denunciation, there is also the announcement of a possible school for the popular classes, through the justice and solidarity intrinsic to the democratic dream of a plural and diverse school, which not only coexists in the same territory, but is constituted and recognized as an important part of the school to be legitimized and valued.
