Nigeria in the feminine: Buchi Emecheta’s narrative

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to carry out an analysis of the novel As alegrias da maternidade (2018) [The Joys of Motherhood, originally published in 1979], by Nigerian writer, Buchi Emecheta. Ancestry, marriage and motherhood are themes analyzed from the perspective of feminist criticism, based on the stream of consciousness of the protagonist narrator Nnu Ego. Through this narrative, Buchi Emecheta problematizes the male institutions that oppress Igbo Nigerian women. The register of ancestral practices in this narrative recalls the place of women’s oppression in Nigeria; marriage is configured as an institution of interests in which the woman is always the currency of exchange; and motherhood is seen as a criterion for survival in traditional societies. Analysis of ancestry, marriage, and motherhood are based on the positions of Chimamanda Adciche (2015), Oyèronké Oyewúmì (2021), Buchi Emecheta (2018), among others.
