THE “FEMININE SELF” IN CHRISTINE DE PIZAN AND IN HADEWIJCH D’ANVERS

Abstract: This article is a translation of the opening conference given at the VII Seminário de Estudos Medievais na Paraíba. The main objective of the article is to reflect on the allegorical narratives of the Middle Ages about love, written in the first person. These texts form a family based on three elements: a) the first-person narrative, that is, a story told by an "I", b) the allegory, in the form of a dream, a vision or a ballad, including the encounter of the "I" with the allegorical personifications and c) the theme of courtly love. To reflect on these allegorical narratives of the self, texts by two medieval authors are analyzed: Christine de Pizan and Hadewijch d'´ Anvers. The guiding questions of the text are the following: How is the relationship between the three elements presented by the female authors? When speaking about love, do they love with words and adopt a first-person discourse that refers to an exemplary experience? How does the feminine "I" influence the allegorical form and the conception of love and, conversely, how do the allegorical form and the conception of love define the possibilities of telling, in the feminine, a love story in the first person? In other words, under what conditions can they be part of the family of texts and present themselves as author-lovers?
