NOTES ON SOUND IN CONTEMPORARY YOUNG ADULT NOVELS

Abstract

In the recent context of media dissemination and sharing, it is possible to observe how audio resources are gaining popularity and repercussion as a medium capable of housing multiple texts previously restricted to print or television formats. Reports or interview programs have become podcasts, accessibility resources provide audio versions of webpage texts ensuring more accessible reading for everyone. Similarly, audiobooks also offer an accessibility experience, in addition to being part of a recent offering of reading on book or audio streaming platforms. Given this scenario, in this study, we propose an investigation into how audio appears in contemporary young adult novels. Our goal is to verify the resources employed by literary production to accommodate sound and provoke different aesthetic experiences through the integration of sound. With this objective, we selected three young adult literature books: Samambaia Canibal: Um Astucioso Antropófago-Tropicalista (2022), by Tiago de Melo Andrade, Você Não é Invisível (2022), by Lázaro Ramos, and the audiobook A Mágica Mortal: Uma Aventura do Esquadrão

Zero (2023), by Raphael Montes. These three works integrate sound in different layers of literary composition and offer a characterization of the presence of sound in contemporary young adult novels. Thus, in this work, we intend to uncover the meaning resources enhanced by sound within contemporary young adult novels, offering renewed meaning experiences.
