THE REVELATIONS OF JULIAN OF NORWICH IN BRAZIL: A COMAPRATIVE ANALYSIS OF THREE TRANSLATIONS INTO PORTUGUESE

ANÁLISE COMPARADA DE TRÊS TRADUÇÕES PARA O PORTUGUÊS

Abstract

This research seeks to carry out a comparative analysis of the three Brazilian translations of the work A Revelation of Love (c. 1395) by the English mystic Julian of Norwich (c. 1343 – c. 1416). These translations were published in the years 2018 and 2023. With the titles Revelações do Amor Divino and Revelações sobre o amor divino, they place the author within the context of theological and devotional studies, as well as into the Brazilian literary system, since the author is considered the first great prose writer in English Literature.The first translation was published by Paulus in 2018 and it was carried out by Marcelo Masson Maroldi and constitutes a translation based on a translation into modern English by Grace Warrack from 1901, whose original manuscript is in the London Museum. The second was made by Maria Elizabeth Hallak Nielson from the Sloane manuscript in the British Library (c.1650). The third is written by Marcelo Musa Cavallari and contains the short and long versions of the aforementioned text. We will therefore aim to compare the translations using the following theoretical foundation: Berman (1995, 2007), Britto (2012), Lefevere (2009), and Gentzler (2009). Through this research, we realized that the first two translators present the religious elements of the text to the detriment of its aesthetic and literary elements. The third translator seeks to emphasize more the literary content of the anchoress's revelations.
