Over the past decade, various Brazilian governmental agencies such as the Ministério da Educação e Cultura (MEC) have expressed strong concern about the active number of readers in the country. A 2004 report from Folha de São Paulo shows that the average number of books read is 1.8 per person. Given the impossibility of conducting specific literature classes in schools, since the curriculum does not allow it, we intend to create a virtual community aimed at fostering an audience interested in literature, especially fantastic literature. We understand that through text interpretation it is possible to activate the innate investigative instinct of adolescents while encouraging them to imagine situations beyond predictable content. Based on Vygotsky’s (1987) sociocultural theory and Ausubel’s (1963) meaningful learning, as well as Piglia’s (1986) and Todorov’s (1970) theories to define fantastic texts, we will carry out two classes focused on a selected fantastic short story, integrated into the existing curriculum. Thus, the teacher will design lesson plans grounded in the aforementioned theories and develop analytical tools for subsequent discussion within the virtual community.
