In the text Gender: a useful category of historical analysis, the author brings some considerations about gender studies, emphasizing in this perspective, the theoretical aspects that support these studies in order to explain the use of this term over the centuries. Throughout the text, the author weaves theoretical discussions, explaining that the use of the term gender has been constructed as a way of designating social relations between the sexes. As an important theorist in gender studies, Scott regards the term as an important category in studies of the social differences that have been constructed between men and women. In this perspective, he defends Foucault's theory of power, in the sense of emphasizing that the term can be understood through the understanding of power relations as dispersed and unequal networks endowed with intentionality and subjectivities. Therefore, it studies gender as a category of analysis in a historical perspective.
