Abstract

This essay reflects on Jan van Eyck’s Portrait of a Man (“Leal Souvenir”, 1432), drawing on what Quignard (2022) calls “the missing image”. Across three movements, in dialogue with other voices, it examines the immanent relation between desire and absence, from the perspective of an image that senses, thinks, and acts, embodied in a movement which I designate dream-becoming. This becoming reappears as an act of zoo-graphos (life-writing), linked not only to a figurative element in the painting but, above all, to a drive to see the absent produced within the image.
