Abstract

This text is a review of the book “Five Pathways to Engagement: Toward Student Learning and Success”, written by Dennis Shirley and Andy Hargreaves and published in 2022. The work analyzes key educational challenges in the post-pandemic context, signaling the dawn of an era defined by engagement, well-being, and identity—replacing the stagnant model of performance and effort that had previously dominated education. Divided into six chapters, the text addresses myths and obstacles regarding engagement, critiques standardized learning assessments, and proposes alternatives for engaging students. It draws on a sociological approach and highlights the limitations of individualistic and psychologizing perspectives.
