Abstract

Municipal Solid waste (MSW ) release a leachate, which are often arranged in stabilization ponds for later release in watercourses. This work aims at the study of the sediments of the three stabilization ponds Botuquara the controlled landfill ( Ponta Grossa - PR) and soil leachate receiving the third pond, in order to assess the retention of metals by determining the pH, organic carbon, organic matter (OM ), degree of humification, cation exchange capacity (CEC ), total Kjeldahl nitrogen, carbon / nitrogen ratio, content of clay, sand and silt, and the concentrations of some metals. In sediment ponds, it was observed in terms of average pH 8.69 , 1.34 % of generally well humified OM, 1.56 % clay and CEC values between 12.85 and 22.53 cmolc/kg but that conditions were not sufficient for a complete retention of metals, as soil that receives the third leachate pond, concentrations of Ag and Pb are higher than those found in sediment ponds.
